Approach of the German Institute for Tourism Research
The objectives of the German Institute for Tourism Research are to strengthen applied empirical tourism research, to transfer the knowledge gained to science, business and society and to promote high-quality teaching by providing current and relevant discussion and solution approaches for tourism issues at a scientific level.
The German Institute for Tourism Research conducts applied tourism research with the approach of taking up and analyzing socio-politically relevant topics in independent research. To this end, the German Institute of Tourism Research develops tools and instruments for tourism in order to achieve practical benefits for the tourism industry. The Institute also aims to contribute to a better understanding of tourism phenomena by further developing methods.
The German Institute for Tourism Research is Germany's first point of contact for applied, empirical tourism research in its following and interconnected core areas:
Travel behavior
Consideration of travel under political, economic, social, ecological and technical influences with a focus on people and tourism demand
Effects of traveling
Examination of the social, environmental and economic effects resulting from the demand for travel. In addition to aspects such as tourism acceptance or value chains, the effects of travel behavior on the environment and the necessary derivations are also examined, for example
Strategic development
Supporting tourism management in strategic decisions through insights from travel behavior and the effects of tourism demand
Current research projects
Surveys show that events are among the most popular vacation activities and can have a positive impact on local tourism. The project examines the influence of major European events on vacation travel planning. The investigation is carried out as part of a quantitative survey.
The German Institute for Tourism Research (DI Tourismusforschung) and the Institute for the Transformation of the Energy System (ITE) at the FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences are working on a joint project with the Federal Association of the Camping Industry in Germany (BVCD) on the regenerative orientation of campsite energy systems.
The aim of the project is to measure awareness of the "Energy Coast" as a tourist destination. With the help of a population-representative survey, different terms of the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein are tested for their familiarity and popularity and assessments of characteristics are surveyed.
