Cotubanamá is the most visited national park in the Dominican Republic. The revenue generated from ticket sales is of great importance for financing the country’s protected areas system. However, the large number of visitors and the uneven spatial and temporal distribution of visitors place significant strain on the ecosystem at the local level. As part of the project, the DI Tourismusforschung, in collaboration with its partner university, Universidad Central del Este, is investigating visitor patterns, attitudes, and behavior.
To date, there is a lack of scientifically sound data on tourism in Cotubanamá National Park. The main objective of the project is therefore to collect baseline data for the first time. Based on the results, recommendations for visitor guidance and management will be developed to support the park administration in making tourism in Cotubanamá more sustainable.
