The authentic experience of wilderness, in particular the observation of wild animals in their natural habitats, is a key success factor for protected areas as destinations in nature tourism. “Wilderness” in the tourism context is socially constructed and influenced by social trends and media representations (Lemelin, 2006; Urry & Larsen, 2011). The project aims to investigate the extent to which this shapes the expectations of nature tourists and what role these play in the evaluation of nature experiences as part of visitor satisfaction. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the University of Manitoba (Canada). Intended duration is 09/2020-08/2021. The above-mentioned question will be investigated using various international case studies. In addition to the empirical examination, the topic will also be evaluated as part of a systematic review. Last but not least, the results should help to reconcile the goals of nature and species conservation with the demands and expectations of visitors and tourism companies.
