Project description

Market research is an important basis for the development of tourism offers and their successful positioning on the market. It serves to identify current and long-term developments in the supply and demand of products and services and enables a targeted response to changes. In the past, market research data on German demand for coach travel was hardly available or difficult to access for the large number of providers in the German coach travel market. This applies both to information about German attitudes towards coach travel and the travel behavior of coach travelers as well as the future potential of the segment. This situation was the starting point for the initiation of a cooperative research project by the German Institute for Tourism Research (DI Tourismusforschung) in collaboration with the Federal Association of German Bus and Coach Companies (bdo) and KRAVAG-LOGISTIC Versicherungs-AG.

Project goals

The aim of the project was to compile central data on the existing demand for coach travel and the potential in the coach travel market in Germany and to make this available to the coach travel industry. To this end, existing data sources were reviewed and evaluated in terms of their usefulness and additional information was collected in a separate study.

Project results

The result is an extensive collection of data from three different sources:

  • The Forschungsgemeinschaft Urlaub und Reisen e. V. has been surveying the travel behavior of Germans for many years as part of its travel analysis. In the project described here, data from the travel analysis on German coach travel, the travel behavior of coach travelers and the potential for coach travel in the German source market were integrated.
  • In the Destination Brand study series, the interest of Germans in a variety of vacation themes and activities is examined on a regular basis. As part of the project, participation in the study took place in order to examine the vacation activity "coach travel" in the context of a large number of other vacation activities for the first time.
  • The project's own representative survey of Germans aged 16 and over addressed questions that could not be answered by the existing data sources. This primarily concerned the image of coach travel, the suitability of the coach as a means of transport for vacation travel from the Germans' point of view and the reasons for a possible lack of interest in coach travel.

The brochure "Coach Travel - An Overview of Coach Travel Demand in Germany" summarizes selected results and findings from the various studies conducted. It is aimed at stakeholders in the coach travel industry and provides an overview of the following aspects:

  • Image of coach travel in Germany
    • Spontaneous associations with coach travel
    • Profile characteristics of coach tours
  • German coach travel
    • Market position and development of coach travel in the German source market
    • Travel behavior of coach passengers
  • Potential for coach travel in Germany
    • Germans' interest in coach travel
    • Vacation preferences and socio-demographics of prospective coach travelers
    • Top of Mind destinations for coach tours
  • Reasons for not being interested in coach travel

The individual graphics in the brochure can be downloaded here.

A complete report on the results of the primary survey is also available: Bus tourism demand in Germany - primary survey results report
In addition to being prepared for the coach travel industry, the findings will be published in scientific publications by the German Institute for Tourism Research and integrated into the International Tourism Management course at the FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences (e.g. basis for Bachelor's and Master's theses).
