Project description

Destination management organizations (DMOs) have an increasing number of options for collecting data about their (potential) visitors. These various data sources provide valuable insights for the strategic planning, management, and monitoring of destination-related tasks. To make effective use of this wealth of information, a central “hub” is needed where all this data can be aggregated, processed, analyzed, and visualized—a business intelligence solution comprising the core components of a Destination Data Warehouse and a Destination Dashboard.
State-level DMOs, such as the Tourismusverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V., face the challenge of developing such a digital solution—ideally—for all relevant stakeholders in the state. The purpose of this project is therefore to conduct a preliminary study on the development of a business intelligence solution for tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The study aims to develop a vision for a “Smart Destination” in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and use cases, and outline the path toward developing a destination dashboard. The platform is intended to enable stakeholders at various levels of destination management in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to identify trends and patterns early on based on a shared information base, make accurate forecasts, and support and accelerate decision-making processes.
The preliminary study is being led by NTT DATA Deutschland SE (in cooperation with dwif-Consulting GmbH), which has already designed and implemented similar dashboards in Denmark. Given the innovative nature of the project for German destinations, DI Tourismusforschung is supporting the project from a scientific perspective. It contributes its subject-specific theoretical and applied experience and knowledge—drawn from current research and project findings—to the overall conceptual considerations as well as to specific issues within the project that require clarification.
