This also applies to hiking tourism, where a development towards a greater focus on experiences can be observed. It is currently evident that a qualitative differentiation (experience, atmosphere) is being promoted in order to create unique nature experiences, for example through storytelling, spirituality and addressing longings. As part of this project, FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences experiences (and experiences) in a nature-related tourism context were focused on using the example of beach hikers on the island of Sylt together with students from the “International Tourism Management” course. As part of the interlinking of research and teaching, the existing theoretical findings of the Institute of Management and Tourism on the topics of hiking and experience genesis and channels were used in a case study seminar in the winter semester 2018/19 to gain a deeper insight into the experience of beach hiking among Sylt’s day and overnight guests. While Sylt, as a well-known German vacation destination, is already well positioned in both the high and low seasons, there is certainly further untapped potential in the winter months, which can be tapped into by beach walkers in particular. The field test carried out with students from the “International Tourism Management” course tested the identification of tips for a more precise visitor approach for this target group based on specific beach hiking experiences. To determine the specific content of the aforementioned experiences, a quantitative survey of Sylt beach hikers was conducted by 14 students from the FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences in October 2018. The survey generated data on travel motivation and behavior during the current trip, as well as on the types of beach walking experiences. This data was used to generate specific instructions for future marketing, particularly with regard to suitable visual and audio language. The results of the case study seminar have been taken up in the Institute’s further research work.
The results of the project were presented on November 14, 2019 at the 23rd annual conference of the German Society for Tourism Science in Deggendorf and published in the accompanying conference proceedings.
