Project description

The tourism industry has received little attention in this context to date. It is true that GHG data also plays a major role for the tourism industry and is quantified in particular for modes of transport or at destination level. However, the GHG data published in CSR reports has not yet been the focus of scientific studies. This research gap will be addressed in a research project of the German Institute for Tourism Research led by Rebekka Weis starting in July 2022.

Project goals

  • Development of a multidimensional quality standard for the analysis of GHG data in tourism CSR or sustainability reports, which can simultaneously show whether and to what extent a CSR report contains elements of greenwashing in this regard
  • Checking the data quality of tourism CSR and sustainability reports from various sectors
  • Comparison of data quality in the tourism industry with other sectors and highlighting differences and similarities
  • Derivation of means and formats to improve data quality in tourism CSR reports

Project results

As a result of the first objective, Rebekka Weis presented the path to developing the quality benchmark as a poster at the 25th annual conference of the German Society for Tourism Science (DGT) on "Tourism and green transformation - aspects of tourism in the transition to climate neutrality" from 8 to 10 December 2022 in Bern. These results will also be published in the conference proceedings shortly. The poster and the developed quality benchmark can also be found here.
