Project description

In cooperation with the “Magic Cities”, the German Institute for Tourism Research at the FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences is focusing on the planning and attitudes of German city travelers in times of Corona. Cities as multifunctional places play a special role for tourism as a space of opportunity and a place of longing. In recent years, they have served as growth drivers in German tourism. However, the Covid-19 pandemic is suddenly presenting cities with the challenge of answering questions beyond overtourism and visitor management: How do cities remain attractive as destinations in the corona pandemic? Do cities have to adapt to new target groups? Are the expectations of city travelers changing? In addition to presenting the current attitudes of city planners towards the corona crisis and its influence on travel behavior, the research focuses on determining a typology that classifies German city travelers in terms of their social desirability and economic potency. The results should help cities to manage sustainable city tourism in times of corona.
