Project description

The “DPM: Data, People, Management: Digital Visitor Management 2.0” project builds on the findings of the LAB-TOUR SH and AIR projects and aims to further develop digital visitor management in Schleswig-Holstein. The focus is on needs-based, practical research into the three key components: DATA, PEOPLE, and MANAGEMENT. While data collection has already taken place in many regions, there is currently no open and scalable IT platform that aggregates existing data, makes it usable for forecasts, and provides central access for tourism stakeholders. Together with our project partner, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, DI Tourismusforschung is dedicated to developing a dashboard that consolidates information from sensors, forecasting models, and other open data sources. The project is scheduled to last three years and is divided into three sequential phases. In addition to the technical implementation of the IT platform, new management approaches are also being tested—for example, through reservation systems and pricing strategies. The effectiveness of these measures is being examined through field experiments. A particular focus is on bicycle tourism. At the same time, use cases are being implemented and evaluated in various destinations to ensure the transferability of the results. DPM views digital visitor management not only as a source of information for visitors but, above all, as an internal management tool for destinations. The project is guided by the strategies of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in the areas of digitalization, open data, open source, and artificial intelligence. The goal is to create an open data platform that can be used and further developed by destinations, IT service providers, and institutions alike. The project thus contributes to the digital transformation in tourism and to better management of visitor flows while taking ecological and economic goals into account.
