Destination management organizations are increasingly able to collect data about visitors on-site. This ranges from sensor data and data from point-of-sale systems to data not typically associated with tourism, such as the fill levels of trash cans or water consumption at tourist hotspots.
This data can be used to derive insights into visitor numbers and visitor flows. However, a “central hub” is needed where all this data converges—a destination dashboard. So far, there have been isolated proprietary solutions from sensor providers or other technical service providers. Nevertheless, these solutions are severely limited in their functionality.
The project aims to test a solution in collaboration with partners NTT Data (technology) and Wangerland (tourism). NTT Data is responsible for providing the technical infrastructure in the form of a dashboard and ensuring that data is imported. Wangerland is responsible for recruiting local tourism and non-tourism partners and ensuring that they provide the necessary data. Finally, the German Institute for Tourism Research is tasked with monitoring and evaluating this process. This evaluation includes, on the one hand, the genesis of data integration. This involves assessing both the quality and relevance of each data source as well as how well—or poorly—this data can be integrated into the dashboard solution. Various conclusions can be drawn from the analysis of the data. These are then proposed to local stakeholders. The DI Tourismusforschung assesses which measures are actually implemented.
The challenges and obstacles are documented in a final report, which also includes an assessment of which aspects offer potential solutions for future projects and which approaches should not be pursued further.
The Destination Dashboard is an innovative pilot project that is developing a central platform for visualizing, analyzing, and forecasting tourism data. By enabling on-site data collection, the project consolidates various data sources—such as booking data, sensor data, and other tourism-related information—to support informed strategic decision-making by destination management organizations (DMOs).
