Project description

The 2021 hiking study focused on hikers who, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, chose to take one or more hiking vacations in Germany. It also examined the original travel plans, the intention of these “newly” acquired hikers to return for a hiking vacation in Germany, and the impact on their hiking behavior. A total of 3,001 people across Germany were surveyed as part of an ad hoc online survey conducted by the market research institute Ipsos. This study is also representative of German-speaking internet users aged 16 to 75 living in private households.

Project results

In the study, 46% of respondents reported having taken one or more vacations in Germany since March 2020 during which they went hiking. Of these, slightly more than half had not planned this vacation with hiking activities as such prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A large majority had not yet made any vacation plans before March. With regard to their most recent vacation, about 14% wanted to take a hiking vacation, but not in Germany—mostly in other European countries. The remaining respondents had either taken a vacation in Germany but not a hiking vacation, or had taken neither a hiking vacation nor a vacation in Germany.
