Announcement: Webinar “Tourism acceptance in Schleswig-Holstein – key findings at regional level”
Destination managers are increasingly recognizing that it is necessary for successful destination development to take into account the attitudes of residents towards tourism in their place of residence. Tourism development that is supported by all stakeholder groups and realized in harmony with the locals – these are the goals of field of action 9 “Tourism awareness and acceptance” of the new Schleswig-Holstein 2030 tourism strategy.
Representative results on tourism acceptance have been available for the federal level and for Schleswig-Holstein as a whole since 2019. Although it is not possible to speak of a nationwide acceptance problem – neither at federal level nor for Schleswig-Holstein – regional differences and localized problems are emerging, and a comparison over time also shows that acceptance among locals is stagnating. In addition to the permanent monitoring of tourism acceptance at state level, it was also determined in the context of field of action 9 that acceptance measurements are also necessary at regional level.
The first measurement of tourism acceptance at regional level was carried out in June/July 2022 as part of a research project by the German Institute for Tourism Research (FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences) together with Tourismusverband Schleswig-Holstein e.V.. The following five destinations were examined as part of a representative survey (population aged 16 and over): (1) Baltic Sea Schleswig-Holstein + Holstein Switzerland, (2) North Sea Schleswig-Holstein, (3) Duchy of Lauenburg + Stormarn, (4) Urban area Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg), (5) Rest of inland. In addition to perceptions of the overall impact and in relation to individual positive and negative aspects (e.g. tourism as an economic factor), locals were also asked how they perceive the number of guests in their own place of residence and which measures to minimize negative impacts are seen as promising.
The key findings will now be presented digitally on January 18, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in a cooperative event organized by the Schleswig-Holstein Tourism Association (TVSH) and the German Institute for Tourism Research and then discussed.
